Advocacy

Improving the bigger picture.

Solving a problem for one client is valuable. Helping improve how problems are understood and managed across an industry can have an even greater impact.

Alongside my consultancy work, I contribute to policy discussions, professional bodies and industry initiatives focused on flooding, resilience and the built environment, with the aim of helping raise standards and share practical lessons from real-world experience.

Future engineers and entrepreneurs

As a teenager I never imagined that a flooded family home would eventually lead to a career in engineering and entrepreneurship. Because of that experience, I believe strongly in helping others discover the opportunities available to them.

I was an Arkwright Engineering Scholar and now volunteer as an ambassador and interviewer, helping identify and support future engineering talent.

I also support initiatives including Tomorrow's Engineers and regularly return to schools, universities and industry events to speak about engineering, entrepreneurship, resilience and leadership.

Alongside engineering, I have spent much of my career encouraging entrepreneurship. After being named Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards in 2016, I later returned as a judge and supporter of the awards. I also served as a judge for the StartUp Awards, helping recognise and encourage new business founders across the UK.

Engineering opens far more doors than most people realise. If I can help someone discover that for themselves, I consider that time well spent.

Community and resilience

Flooding is ultimately about people.

While much of my work takes place through consultancy and engineering projects, I have also supported local communities and flood action groups over the years, particularly where practical knowledge and experience can help make a difference.

I continue to support the Woodborough Flood Action Group and have worked alongside local representatives on long-term flood resilience initiatives for the area.

I have also supported community resilience projects around the country, provided voluntary assistance during flood events and contributed to awareness campaigns aimed at helping people better understand and prepare for flood risk.

Speaking up

In 2016, as a recent graduate, I publicly raised concerns about the way student loan interest was being communicated to students and graduates.

The campaign received national media attention and sparked wider debate about the issue. While not every aspect of the discussion was universally agreed upon, it demonstrated the importance of asking difficult questions and contributing constructively to public debate.

That principle continues to guide much of my work today.

Whether through engineering, business, policy or education, I believe expertise has the greatest value when it is shared and used to help others.
